Surgery: What To Expect

What you need to know before your pet has surgery

Thank you for choosing Green Cove Animal Hospital. We are committed to providing an exceptional standard of care. We treat each and every patient as though they were our own. To help with any questions that you may have and also to minimize any stress that you or your pet may endure, we are providing you with the following information.

1

No-Show Policy

All surgical appointments will have a $50 Surgical Suite Reservation Fee when the appointment is scheduled. If the surgery appointment is missed, the fee is non-refundable. If the appointment is kept, the fee will go towards the visit. Surgeries must be canceled at least 3 days in advance.
2

Fasting

Please be sure to withhold food after 8pm the night before the surgery. Water is allowed.
3

Medications

Unless otherwise instructed by your veterinarian, please do not administer any medications the morning of surgery.
4

Diabetics

Please follow specific instructions from your veterinarian. This will include special instructions based on your pets insulin needs and other medications and medical conditions.
5

Drop off Time

Our drop off period is 7:30am-8:00am. If you cannot drop off within this time frame please speak to the technician or receptionist so that we can make alternate arrangements. You will have consent forms to fill out so please allow at least 10-15 minutes for full check
6

Communication

Our surgery technician will contact you via phone as soon as the surgery is complete. At this time, you will be given a quick update on your pet along with a discharge time.
7

Surgery Time

Surgeries are scheduled only Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays unless there is an emergency. We cannot give you an exact time that your pet’s surgery will be performed, though usually it will happen in the morning before 12:00pm. If our plans must change, we will contact you via phone.
8

Post-operative Care

Following surgery, your pet will be monitored closely during the recovery process. Once your pet is stable, we will finalize the chart and call you to establish a discharge time.
9

Discharge from our Hospital

We will only discharge your pet once we are confident that their pain is under control, no complications have arisen, and that they are recovering from the surgery as expected. Please allocate at least 10 minutes for discharge. You will be provided with detailed discharge instructions. A member of our surgical team will go over these instructions to be sure that you understand and to answer any questions that you may have.
